Get some help from the translator who is actually bilingual

Hi guys!

My name is Brian, a Chinese native speaker (mandarin), and I'm currently doing my master degree of translating and interpreting (between English and Chinese) in Macquarie University, Sydney, Australia.

Today, many overseas Chinese learners (I mean people whose first languages are not Chinese) are willing to find some Chinese native speakers to help them learn this language. Or just get some documents or advertisements to be translated. Many of these people just pick up a translator in China and ask them to do the job, without truly knowing their English competency.

According to my own experience, most Chinese English learners are actually very poor in English. I had been studying English from year 3 of my primary school until graduating from my university in China with a bachelor degree of English and a certificate of the highest level of English language test. At first, I was quite confident about my English competency. However, when I arrived in Australia, I found that I couldn’t even communicate with people freely. And finally, I noticed the English I learnt in China is holy crap. (You know what? the mainstream English grammar books in China are written by Chinese scholars other than English native speakers!)

After staying in Australia for one year and studying for my degree, I’m now very confident of my English competency. Bilingual at last!
